COMMERCIALISATION OF 3RD LEVEL ICT RESEARCH IS NEEDED
Measures to promote the conversion of third level research into commercial products in the ICT sector are needed, according to ICT Ireland. A report launched today by ICT Ireland’s sub committee on intellectual property management has called on the government to create an environment for the successful commercialisation of third level research. The report calls specifically for the following measures:
· The establishment and funding of an intellectual property management and commercialisation centre of excellence for the ICT sector. This would be staffed by commercially experienced people.
· The introduction of financial incentives to encourage near to market and industry led research and development.
· A realignment of remuneration, promotion and incentive structures for researchers in third level institutes to recognise and encourage commercialisation of intellectual property arising from research in these institutes.
· A programme to educate researchers about intellectual property management issues
